WILL YOUR ROAD BE JOINING THE PLAY OUT SCHEME THIS SUMMER?…

Posted by Devenia Besant on 03 Jul 2024

The summer holidays are fast approaching and even though we have all weathers during our English summer it’s so important to keep the kids occupied and having fun in the fresh air. ¬†With 6 / 7 weeks on our hands to fill, the Playing Out Scheme is a perfect solution to keep the kids active and integrated with their neighbours over the weekends during this time.

Our local Playing Out Scheme was bought to the area by Jo Markworth and was approved by Epsom & Ewell Borough Council last year.

Jo say’s of the scheme:

We have been running Playing Out sessions once a month on a Sunday afternoon in our road since November 2023. They have provided an opportunity for the children to make new friends, irrespective of the schools they attend, while being outdoors, learning new skills and having fun. For the adults too, there has been the chance to get to know their neighbours better, as well as providing an afternoon of play for their families right on their doorstep.

Playing Out sessions are short, resident-led road closures which are held on a regular basis, which can be adapted to suit the residents involved. We are running 3 hour sessions over the summer, but during the darker, colder months they lasted for 2 hours.

With some initial input to make an application to Epsom and Ewell Borough Council to close the road, the benefits that come from it are so worthwhile.”

Jo is hoping other roads in Epsom and Ewell might be interested in the Playing Out sheme, you can find more information on the Epsom and Ewell Borough Council website about applying for a temporary road closure here, however Jo is more than happy to help by offering advice and support. For more information email playingoutinepsomewell@gmail.com and Jo will be sure to reply.

Enjoy!
