UPDATE: WHAT NOW FOR OUR SURE START CENTRES (NOW CALLED FAMILY CENTRES)

Posted by Kat Heath on 19 Sep 2019

It has been publicised for some time now that our local Sure Start Centres have been under threat and unfortunately as from June 2019 both Meadow and St. Martins Sure Start Centres will be closing. This is primarily due to local government cuts however it’s not all sad news for the future of our very much cherished Children’s Centres. Which are now renamed as ‘Family Centres’

Under the New Families Resilience Model which is a scheme adopted by Surrey County Council Epsom Family Centre (pound lane) and Riverview Family Centre will remain open.

Across the County up to 31 of 58 centres have been forced to close with 21 remaining open. Meaning that the centres that remain open will have to deal with a wider reach to accommodate the families of Surrey.

Emma Smith, Executive Head of Epsom Primary which is home to Epsom Family Centre explains
‘The next few months will be challenging.’

With double the reach but only a third of the budget to keep the Family Centres functioning this certainly will be a challenge however Emma remains optimistic.

We are very creative in finding ways to continue to meet the very complex needs of our community without letting barriers get in the way.”

Under the new government led model all centres will cater for 0-11year olds instead of just up to fives. There will be additional satellite centres and a mobile centre also in place. Outreach work will be priority reaching out to a broader area between boroughs.

Epsom Family Centre will work closely alongside Riverview Family Centre which will also remain open, ensuring they are offering a wide range of support for the families of Epsom and Ewell.

Below is the new revised timetable for both Epsom Family Centre and Riverview Family Centre. Please note these centres are also open throughout the holiday time as well as term time.
