TO MICRO NEEDLE OR NOT, SOMERS AESTHETICS EPSOM #REVIEW..
Posted by Hayley Boland on 08 Oct 2021
When someone mentions the word needle no positive association springs to mind. So when I was asked if I wanted to try a micro needling treatment I must admit I was not jumping for joy. I have a low pain threshold, actually I have zero pain threshold so the idea of my face being jabbed with needles did not appeal! However all in the quest to support a local business, give honest feedback plus the promise of more healthier, youthful skin I booked myself in with Caroline who runs Somers Aesthetics.
Caroline qualified in June 2021 after completing her 1 to 1 training with Bloom Aesthetics Academy, she has both a home based salon and a treatment room based in Fitness Theory, Epsom and offers a range of treatments from micro needling to anti wrinkle injections and dermal fillers.
So what is Micro needling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses a Dermapen or Dermaroller which is a cluster of small needles that when applied cause tiny punctures in the skin. These small contact points encourage the body to create a wound healing response which encourages your skin to make more collagen and elastin. Microneedling can help the following concerns:
– Dark spots or patches on your skin (hyperpigmentation)
– Large pores
– Reduced skin elasticity
– Sun damage
– Fine lines and wrinkles
So back to my experience, I arrived to meet Caroline at Fitness Theory and she welcomed me into her treatment room. We sat down and went through a medical consultation form. Caroline was wearing a face covering which was nice to see. Caroline clearly explained what was going to happen with the treatment and also the benefits of having it and when I asked if it would hurt, she told me that it felt like a scratchy sensation rather than pain so I felt at ease. She also advised that my skin may be red after.
Once on the treatment couch Caroline explained she would apply collagen gel to my face which aids in hydrating the skin and giving it a healthy glow it also acts as a base for the dermapen rather than using it on dry skin which can be painful. The gel felt similar to an ultrasound gel and was cool and soothing on my face . My skin lapped up the gel so Caroline applied another coat and we waited 5 minutes before starting the treatment to see if any more was needed.
Caroline started on my forehead, she explained she would use a lower setting on the forehead as its thinner skin. She moved across my forehead in circular movements and I was surprised at how relaxing it felt. After the forehead she moved to the bridge of my nose and warned me I may experience a slight pin prick of blood. After my nose Caroline said she was going to increase the intensity and start on my cheeks again this did not hurt at all. She went over the surface of my cheeks and chin with ease, she then did my forehead again before contouring my cheeks. The treatment lasted around 15 minutes. Caroline told me not to remove the excess gel from my face as my skin would naturally absorb it. Caroline explained that I could not take a hot shower, apply make up or any other products to my skin for 24 hours after the treatment so that was a good excuse for me to get back into my lounge wear for the rest of the day!
Caroline recommended having Microneedling once a month for the first 4 months then after that every 3 to 6 months depending on how your skin feels. She also recommended coupling the treatment with Dermaplaning which she also offers for an extra smooth appearance.
24 hours after the treatment my skin felt hydrated and I think a little tighter, but the full results will become apparent in a few weeks as it can take the body 4 to 6 weeks to produce brand new collagen.
I can’t wait to go back for my next treatment and so the journey to a healthier, more youthful skin continues!
