I can’t believe we’re heading into June already and half-term is here (check out some holiday camps here if you need to book something last minute!). The summer events are on the way, the most famous being The Epsom Derby.

So here’s the lowdown on what’s happening in the area this month.

Dreamboys – No Strings Attached @ Epsom Playhouse

Can Do! Group at Epsom Family Centre 

Home-Start Epsom, Ewell and Banstead’s next Can Do! Group is on Thursday, June 1st (10-11.30am) at Epsom Family Centre on Pound Lane.

This is a supportive playgroup for parents of children with additional needs (aged 0-11 years). Call or WhatsApp on the numbers above if you’re interested in attending. Visit their Facebook page for further details.

Tales from the Trees at The Horton 

Head down to The Horton on Thursday, 1st June (2pm) for a terrific tangle of puppetry, storytelling, live music and comedy. Let Squashbox Theatre be your guide to the tremendous world of trees from branch to leaf and twig to root, from berry to blossom and bark to fruit! Meet Cheeky McNutface, Craig the Forest Ranger, and a host of friendly forest creatures.

This 55 minute theatre show is suitable for children aged 5+ and their families.

Ladies Day @The Derby Arms

Enjoy brunch or lunch at The Derby Arms during the racing event of the year!  Booking is strongly advised!

Merland Rise Kids Movie Day

Looking for ways to entertain the kids over half term? Take them along to Merland Rise’s movie day on Friday, 2nd June (10.30am-2pm). Watch films, munch on some movie snacks, and then why not treat yourself to lunch at the café where kids eat for £1 with any adult meal!

Children’s Aerial Circus Workshop

The Horton is running two Children’s aerial circus workshops: Friday, 2nd June (10.30am-12.30pm) and Saturday, 3rd June (9.30am-11.30am).

The two-hour workshop is suitable for 7–15-year-olds who are new to aerial but enjoy being physical and trying new things. The workshop will include learning aerial trapeze and silks as well as theatre games and other floor-based circus skills.

Tutors, Bryony and Edd have both taught theatre and aerial circus extensively for over 10 years, including in top London Circus Schools. Tickets: £25.

Epsom Derby Family Festival 

The Derby Family Festival is a ticketed enclosure on the famous Hill on Saturday, June 3rd. There’s all day entertainment for the whole family from tots to young teens, parents and grandparents with magicians, rides, comedy, bubbleologist, face painters, pony rides and more.

The Main Stage is back for 2023 with an exciting line-up and there are different zones to explore: entertainment zone, activity zone; food village and picnics zone. There are dedicated toilet facilities including baby changing.

Stoneleigh Library LEGO club 

Stoneleigh Library’s next Lego club is on Saturday, 3rd June (10.30am-11.30am) and this month’s theme is crazy cars and mighty machines. Booking is recommended as places are limited. You can book in person at the library or email

Beats & Bubbles @The Derby Arms 

Get ready to groove to some great beats and sip on your favourite bubbles at the Beats & Bubbles event at the Derby Arms. Head down on Friday, June 9th  (and every Friday until September) for the ultimate Friday night party with the talented DJ Steve Facey who’ll be playing house music and old school R&B.

Summer Walks – Wild Flower Wander 

Epsom Common Association (ECA) organises a number of walks on the Common each year which are led by local natural history experts. Pete Howarth from the Countryside Team will lead the popular Wild Flower Wander on Saturday, 10th June (2pm).You’ll find and identify many of the more interesting wild flowers and botanical delights resident on the Common.

All walks start from the Stew Pond car park, Christ Church Road (meet near the Gallows gate entrance) and last approximately 2 hours.

The Ashtead Rotary Village Day

The Ashtead Rotary Village Day is on Saturday, 10th June (11am-5pm). There’ll be entertainment for all the family: 100+ stalls from local businesses, charities and community organisations; a funfair; food stalls; dog show and various entertainment shows and participation events in the main arena.

Bourne Hall Museum Kids Club – The Maya Civilisation 

Calling all explorers! Head back in time 1000, 2000, even 3000 years to middle America at Bourne Hall Museum Kids Club on Saturday, 10th June (1pm to 2.30pm). There you will uncover the secrets of the Maya civilisation. Take a look at their ancient calendar that predicted the end of the world, learn their strange ways of using maths and get to hold some valuable artefacts from these highly advanced people.

The Ezee Sport Teddy Bear Picnic and Sports Day is taking place in Nonsuch Park on Sunday, 11th June from 12-4pm. This is a charity event in aid of Downlands Trust and NCT:Sutton, Epsom & District.

There are lots of exciting things planned for the afternoon (as below) and it promises to be a great family event. The afternoon ends with the sports day races.

Big Day Out Dog Show 

This lively and popular summer community fair and dog show just 15 minutes walk from Worcester Park Station returns on Saturday, 17th June (12pm-4pm). Shadbolt Park is volunteer run by residents in Cuddington. With the help of volunteers and local businesses, the event on the paddock raises money every year for local causes.

Are you a parent or caregiver with a child in school Years 5-7? The transition from primary to secondary school can be a challenging time for children and parents alike, but YMCA East Surrey’s upcoming online workshop can help.

Sandown Park Racecourse – Summer Fete & Dog Show 

The Princess Alice Hospice’s much loved Summer Fete and Dog Show is back on Sunday, 25 June (10.30am-3pm) at its new location: Sandown Park Racecourse.

A wonderful family occasion with something for everyone with food and drink, music, demonstrations and entertainment, stalls, a dog show and lots more.

The Fete helps to raise vital funds for the Hospice, a long-established local charity.

Entry to the Fete is £3 per person (under 5s free). The Dog Show registration is 10.30-11.30. On the day registration is £7 per category. If you register in advance, it is £5 per category.

Rotary Club of Epsom – Showcase

Following last year’s success, Epsom Rotary is again holding a local talent Showcase at Epsom Playhouse on Tuesday, 27th June (7pm-9.30pm).

Some fantastic acts from last year’s show will be back again alongside other great new talent. Check out the poster for more details and head down to support the local charities that are performing and other worthy local causes.

Tattenham & Preston Community Police EventThe evening, which is being hosted at Tattenham Library on Wednesday, 28th June (7pm-9pm), will include a presentation by Simon Morris on current scams and how to avoid them plus the opportunity to meet Surrey’s Community Policing Team responsible for Tattenham & Preston. There will be an opportunity to raise issues of concern with local officers. Tea and coffee will also be provided.

Charity Curry Night in aid of The Children’s Trust 

On  Wednesday, 28th June (8pm-10pm) three local Businesses are collaborating for a good cause. Join Dee from Epsom & Ewell Families, Nicci & Sara from All Things Nice and Renu Ballantine (Chef Renu B) at All Things Nice, Ewell Village for an evening of delicious curry, company and drinks in aid of The Children’s Trust.

Epsom Beer & Cider Festival 

Beer and cider festival

The Borough of Epsom and Ewell is hosting the very first Beer & Cider Festival for the whole borough and beyond. On July, 7th and 8th the Epsom Downs Racecourse will play host to over 60 cask ales and ciders.

Enjoy the chance to sample new ales as well as the odd familiar one, with a selection of amazing bands playing crowd-pleasing anthems as the sun descends across the Downs.

Ticket prices are £9.50 which includes entry, a FREE souvenir glass to use and then take home, your own tasting notes brochure and a FREE pint to get you started.

Kids & Teens Summer Holiday Course – Ascension Training 

Looking to get your kids fit and healthy during the summer holidays? Book now for Ascension Training’s Kids/Teens holiday course.

Ascension Training are experienced youth fitness trainers, running school PE sessions, after-school clubs and birthday parties.

Monday, 24th July to Friday, 25th August.
Kids (8-12 years) – Tuesday & Thursday – 11:30-12:30pm
Teens (13-17 years) – Monday, Wednesday, Friday – 11:30-12:30pm

These courses focus on having fun through fitness while building strength and mobility and enhancing cardiovascular fitness. Children will learn a range of skills such as rope climbs and will get an introduction to gymnastics and resistance training. Your kids and teens will become familiar with being out of their comfort zone, developing qualities such as trust, teamwork and integrity.
