THE FESTIVE SEASON @ THE DERBY ARMS, EPSOM…

Posted by Juliet Wheater on 30 Nov 2022

Over the years and whatever the season, I’ve always enjoyed dining at The Derby Arms located across from and named for, the famous and historical racecourse opposite. I’ve enjoyed romantic meals with my husband, post lockdown lunches with the children, summer drinks in the garden, having walked the dog over the downs but for me The Derby Arms does the festive period best.  Its friendly staff offer a warm and welcoming atmosphere and this combined with its stylish décor of beams, stone and wood flooring, plush fabric club chairs by the roaring fire and a wide variety of champagnes, cocktails, wines, beers and spirits, simply throw in twinkling fairy lights and beautiful ribboned festive wreaths and Christmas in my opinion has landed!

The Derby Arms invite you to celebrate the joy of the festive season and indulge in beautifully created dishes, perfectly paired drinks whilst soaking up the ambiance in this stylish pub.

Recently we were invited to sample this years Christmas Menu and I can tell you, you’re in for a real treat!

Three courses are from £31.95 per person and myself and two companions couldn’t wait to catch up over Chapel Down bubbles and delicious, warm and hearty festive dishes.

For Starters we each opted for something different: Chicken Liver & Brandy Parfait with pine nut & pumpkin seed crumb, fig, pear & white balsamic coulis with toasted ciabatta was melt in the mouth delicious as was the Pan-Friend Wild Scallops ras el hanout, smoked haddock Florentine bonbons, celeriac purée, apple & fennel tartare. Cooked to perfection this dish was an absolute triumph of texture and flavour! Another choice from our party was the vegetarian option of Beetroot & Mulled Wine Tarte Tatin with caramelised goats cheese, sweet apple, dressed watercress, which our companion happily confirmed was simply bursting with differing flavours, complimenting each other well.

For Mains our little trio again opted for a multitude of different choices from the menu. First up the showstopper, Hand-carved Turkey with lemon & thyme stuffing, the obligatory Cumberland pig in blanket, roasted potatoes, bread sauce, the not-to-be-missed cranberry sauce and gravy. For myself, the only option was the Slow-Cooked Pork Belly with maple flavour glaze, pulled pork & cider bonbon, truffle dauphinoise potatoes, carrot & red pepper puree and Bordelaise sauce. Simply exquisite, it arrived looking a very generous plate indeed but the melt-in-the-mouth pork, coupled with the indulgent creamy potatoes and perfect crackling, I polished it all off, not bearing to leave even a scrap! Another favourite of mine and one that our dining companion enjoyed, was the Herb-Crusted Salmon Fillet with creamy mash, creamy mash, lemongrass laksa sauce, Tenderstem® broccoli with basil pesto. The only reason that I didn’t fall foul of food envy, is that I vow to return to The Derby Arms soon and will order this choice next time!

For us the Dessert that was the runaway success was the Home-Baked Chocolate Brownie with decadent Belgian chocolate sauce, served with Bourbon vanilla ice cream. However, I know several fans of the Crème Brulee with home-baked sablé biscuits and actually on any other evening, I would have devoured the British Cheese Board with its delectable Cricket St. Thomas camembert, Joseph Heller double Gloucester, Clawson Blue Shropshire, Barbers Farmhouse cheddar, savoury biscuits, grapes, celery, chutney (v) +£2.50

Children can also enjoy the festive menu at £12.95 per child for three-courses.
Starters include: Rustic Tomato & Basil Soup with warm rustic bread and Netherend Farm salted butter as well as Garlic & Mozzarella Pizzette.

Mains include: Hand-Carved Turkey and a delicious lemon & thyme stuffing, Cumberland pig in blanket, roasted potatoes, bread sauce, cranberry sauce parcel, festive vegetables and lashings of gravy. Another option is: Linguine in a tomato sauce with veg sticks or alternatively: Battered Cod Goujons with peas, a choice of veg sticks, baby potatoes or fries.
Desserts include: Christmas Pudding with custard or Apple & Damson Crumble, served with vanilla custard or vanilla soya custard and not forgetting the aforementioned and highly recommended chocolate brownie.
