THE ESHER THEATRE, WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT…
Posted by Devenia Besant on 04 Sep 2021
Last week we had the pleasure of attending the opening of the new Esher Theatre, situated just off Esher High Street. Previously The King George’s Hall, this beautifully renovated theatre space ensures to offer a mix of family entertainment, comedy, live music and theatre. Whilst we enjoyed beautifully created canapés and sparkling wine on arrival, Charlie Swift, creative director of The Esher Theatre whose enthusiasm is infectious discussed how the theatre will be a local creative hub showcasing the best in comedy, live music and theatre in an intimate yet technically and aesthetically astounding venue.
And it didn’t disappoint. As you enter the carefully curated 1930s building there is reference to the post war era of the ‘golden screen’ with an illuminated broadway style light board greeting you above the door.
As the doors open you come into the very chic yet relaxed bar/foyer area which has again been designed and decorated with attentive detail reflecting the 1930s period.
Fern green walls with strategically placed parlour palms and cosy seating areas adorned with twinkling votive candles create the perfect atmosphere for pre show drinks.
The bar is impressively fully stocked with an array of locally sourced drinks including the award winning Gin Kitchen and Silent Pool Gins which is a great way of promoting local businesses and cementing Esher Theatre within the local business community.
As you walk through to the spacious auditorium, despite being a good size it is a very intimate space.
Seating can be up to 224 for theatre productions or up to 250 standing for concerts, demonstrating the multi faceted potential of the venue.
When discussing the theatres versatile seating and layout options, Lisa Black, Sales & Marketing Manager of The Esher Theatre states that various seating layout can be adhered to dependant on the type of show for example round tables of 6 can be laid out for a real intimate audience experience, the possibilities are endless which is what makes the Esher theatre such a versatile venue. During the daytime when not being used for productions, the space is used for an array of classes such as Zumba, Baby Ballet and so much more.
We were treated to a stunning light show which truly showcased the beautiful visual effects of the lighting on the stage.
This was followed by a breathtaking performance from west end performer, Rebecca Delacey, which was somewhat spectacular. This gave the audience a little taster of what the theatres acoustics sounded like and the general atmosphere of the auditorium, which was truly fantastic.
Charlie Swift, creative director, explained that the theatre has many events and shows ahead including the unmissable Halloween Party on 30th October, which is something for the whole family and includes live music, a magician and much more. The first show on Saturday evening with the theatres patron and lead singer of Imagination, Lee John was a sell out show what a great start for the theatre. Another upcoming treat is the comedian Harry Hill is lined up to perform on the 21st of September.
