The festive period is fast approaching and although it is marketed as a happy and joyful season it can also be a time of overwhelm, worry and heightened stress for many.

According to Wendy Plumb who works for the charity Samaritans, 10600 calls were taken last Christmas Day from people who needed to talk to someone.

The increase in consumerism and the commercialisation of Christmas can heighten expectations leading to a decline in our mental health throughout the festivities.

Often spending an unusual amount of concentrated time with family members can also add to stress leading to arguments, upset and a strain on relationships.

A feeling of isolation or loneliness can also be a common issue over Christmas, therefore with this in mind Epsom & Ewell Families have devised a list of services available throughout the Christmas period to facilitate all aspects of your mental health.

A volunteer run charity which offers a helpline, in which volunteers listen, without judgement 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Every 6 seconds Samaritans respond to a call for help and Christmas Day is certainly no exception, indicating that people’s problems and worries don’t just stop because it’s Christmas.

During 2018 the top three common topics which people rang about were (in order): Mental Health, Family Issues and Relationship Issues.

Which are all heightened at this time of year.
