⭐️ Tell us a bit about you and your business?
I’m Jayne McGhee – business owner of Grow Cook Enjoy, I teach adults and children to grow and cook food.
⭐️ What’s changed for your business since the outbreak of Covid-19?
A large amount of my business is based in schools. As soon as schools closed essentially all of my work stopped! I was due to host classes at venues such as RHS Garden Wisley and they canceled too.
Initially I wanted to make sure I fulfilled the the work I had. I created video’s for the classes I was unable to teach but made them useful. In the early stages of the lock down there as no pasta or flour on the supermarket shelves. However, I noticed there was semolina. I created a class to teach how to make home made Orecchiette using just semolina and water, really simple solution to the no pasta problem.
I had just started teaching a Duke of Edinburgh cooking skills course. I took it online and have created video’s of classes with recipes such as a chocolate cake using no flour. I have now moved these classes online.
I have embraced the virtual class I have been zooming classes for children on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday Mornings
I also took my adult classes online and we’ve had a Thai green curry cook along amongst other recipes. This was so much easier than hiring a kitchen and traveling with all my ingredients and equipment. Everyone has had lots of fun, learned a new recipe, had food for dinner. A few put the kids to bed and cooked with their partner for some quality time.
‘Thanks for yesterday evening, it was really enjoyable and tasted delicious! And it was really lovely being able to do something for me, so thank you!’ Catherine
To my delight because of this I was contacted by the Chelsea Theatre. They are a community project and they hosted one of my classes, a lovely older lady joined and it was lovely to cook the recipe, I really felt we had engaged with someone who may be unable to out. I can really see how this could work for older people during the months ahead and beyond.
Finally, I have launched team building classes businesses to bring staff together to cook and meal and eat together. So important to invest in your staff at this time, it provides support and great for a catchup!!
