I’ve always loved the theatre having grown up putting on shows for my family, coercing siblings and cousins to join me, before going on to study Performing Arts at University. We here in Epsom are so lucky to have such vibrant theatre life on our doorstep in the form of Epsom Playhouse and so I was thrilled to review one of our latest performances – Priscilla Queen of the Disaster.

As we took our seats, the set looked pretty familiar as it was not unlike my own sitting room at home! The sofa was strewn with teddies and toys, with the floor sporting lots of loose lego bricks – this was familiar territory to me and I suspect many others in the audience and so through my own assumption of the show, was looking forward to lots of laughs about the crazy ride that motherhood is!

Protagonist Susie dressed in dungarees stepped forward with a huge smile and engaged so naturally, effortlessly and with great warmth with her audience. She stated that tonight she would tell her own story, her own account of lived experiences. Great I thought – often life offers the funniest material. The ‘you can’t make it up’ stuff! Susie is a mother of two little boys (same as me) and with one of the first twists of the evening, stated that she is not in fact an actor which puzzled me! This was a campaign against the perfect often photoshopped lens on life that social media often portrays. Susie is here to shine a light on and keep the balance of motherhood with all its ups and downs.

After just a few minutes, the audience were laughing as Susie threw brilliant and hilarious quips about motherhood. As I suspected the ‘you can’t make it up’ material. With no holds barred, Susie was particularly honest about her births (physically different yes but emotionally worlds apart) she regaled us with funny antidotes about the difficulty of showering following birth (funny in hindsight not at the time stuff!) and a hilarious if mortifying episode at a rather ambitious post-natal yoga class! It was like listening and being entertained by one of your best and funniest friends, the audience laughing out loud, meaning we could all relate.

Susie’s monologue continued in this way before delivering a totally unforeseen punch between the eyes! My companion and I just looked at each other, and even uttered simultaneously ‘what just happened? We the audience had been totally enthralled in following a particular yet not uncommon behaviour of her young son, that you could hear a pin drop. Subtly and so cleverly, a twist in her tale was woven into her dialogue, that there was a slow realisation that crept up upon us, we the spectators of Susie’s lived experience. It was shocking, it was sad, and we were caught totally unawares. Fully invested we rode the rollercoaster of emotions alongside Susie, which was exactly the point. As with life, it happens. Susie was reflective and a lump in my throat began to rise, and I recalled all the women in my life and the fact that as mothers, we each just do our best day by day.

Susie closed her beautiful tribute to her boys, a ‘warts and all’ love story dedicated to them. In time her little boys will have an insight into their mother’s life at that time and how she loved them unconditionally, picked herself up and forged ahead. Even coming to write and perform her brave story! I came away thanking the warm, friendly and funny Susie personally, as she had made me stop and think. She’d made me feel compassionate to others, appreciate my own family life and to laugh when it all goes wrong which it inevitably does!

Susie continues her nationwide tour.
