Last week I had the pleasure of having a one to one Pilates session with Nadine Andre in her lovely home studio in Ewell.

Nadine is almost a fully certified Romana’s Pilates instructor in which her sessions are strictly one to one meaning she can really get to know her clients, their physical issues, their active history including exercise or sports that they participate in and what they want to achieve from their sessions.

What is Romana’s Pilates?
The Pilates method was created by Joseph Pilates.  Pilates believed that the combination of the modern lifestyle, bad posture and inefficient breathing was the root of bad health.  He created the Pilates method as a result helping injured veterans recover and went onto teach Pilates in New York with his wife Clara.

Ballerina Romana Kryzanowska visited Joseph after an ankle injury. After a series of sessions Joseph realised Romana was a natural and she soon became his protege.  Romana worked closely with Joseph until his death in the 1960s and she carried on developing the Pilates method until her death in 2013.
Pilates became an increasingly popular form of exercise throughout the 1970s to present day.  Romana Pilates uses various items of equipment developed by Pilates such as the reformer before working on the mat.  A set of sequences are performed on the equipment to strengthen the body and create a blueprint which can be then used on the mat.

It’s a very thorough, detailed and personal form of exercise which can be tailored to the clients needs.

Nadine says:

‘Pilates is for anyone who wants to improve their strength, flexibility, alignment and balance from the inside out.

It can be a fantastic support to rehabilitate injuries and issues with the body, or as a compliment to any sport or physical activity. It’s also a gentle way to introduce exercise into anyone’s lifestyle.’

My Session:
After the birth of my second child I became increasingly aware of my body and the importance of looking after it.

I participate in regular exercise and have enjoyed regular mat based Pilates classes in the past, however when I entered Nadine’s studio I wasn’t expecting to see the range of apparatus that she has including the reformer and was intrigued.

We sat down and Nadine asked me about my fitness regime, any concerns I have and what I’d like from the session.  Nadine instantly makes you feel at ease, she talks you through each movement on the reformer and guides you fully.  I was so impressed with her attention to detail. Through small tweaks on how I placed my feet or my legs whilst doing the sequences I felt a difference in my posture and how my body felt whilst using the reformer.

The session lasted an hour but went very quickly.  In the session you are working hard but it’s all about control, time and attention taken on all of the exercises.  I felt immediately stretched and realigned even after one session. I was very impressed.

The next day when I did my usual 20 minute work out I could feel I had worked muscles I may have not focused on before! For maximum benefits and long term results a course would definitely be beneficial.

Nadine offers 55 minute sessions at £65 or a block of 10 for £600 (with a £50 saving)
