Over £2,700 raised from Ewell Christmas Light House!

Posted by Devenia Besant on 23 Jan 2018

Every year Carla and Steve Facey from Ewell selflessly light up their house for Christmas to raise funds for a local cause or charity.  Here’s what they’ve got to say about their 2017 efforts:

Congratulations on raising £2,777.44 Carla and Steve for your Christmas lights display, that’s an amazing amount.  How long does it take to put the display up?

This year it actually took just over 120 hours!  That’s like 5 whole days or 3 weeks of full time work!!!. We started work on Monday 6th November 2017.

Your electricity bill after Christmas must be a shocker?

Yes. The lights do use a lot of electric. But we see it as our contribution to the charity.

How do you choose the charity to raise money for?

It’s a difficult one really, because there are so many amazing charities and causes that need support. Our approach is to try and keep it local and meaningful to the community.  It is mainly parents with children that visit our display so we feel our contribution would be better focused on a little one who is less fortunate than us. It’s also very nice when our little needy warriors pay us a visit too.

You chose “Our Boy Vinnie” from other charities / causes nominated this year, can you tell us why?

It was really hard to choose one charity / cause over another but we read Vinnie’s story and it really touched us.  Vinnie was a normal little boy when born but within 2 months his parents had the devastating news he had type 1 SMA.  Their whole world was turned upside down – his parents work so hard to give him the most comfortable life they can, already raising £18,000 in 2017 for a wheelchair for him, so we felt it was a worthy cause to help them with there next goal.

Do you know what the money raised will be used for?

Yes, it’s going towards a Innowalker, which is like a cross trainer and will help strengthen Vinnie’s muscles enabling him to move more and be more comfortable. It costs £11,000 so his parents are fund raising to top it up.

Every year I know you like to make additions to the display, is 2018 going to be a bigger display?

Far too early to answer that one, lol but the house does look very dark at the moment. Hhhmmm!

What really drives you every year to do this display?

We love the lights. They look so beautiful, warm and welcoming. They make you feel so great. It’s like a magical Christmas shrine bringing happiness to so many people. Seeing so many happy children’s faces is priceless – including our own 3 young boys.

We would like to say thank you to everyone that visited us last year and all the previous years too.  The support really does make a difference to a little one’s life and their families.
