MUSICALS IN MARCH @ THE EPSOM PLAYHOUSE & TENORS UN LIMITED REVIEW…
Posted by Juliet Wheater on 08 Mar 2023
Otherwise known as the ‘Rat Pack of Opera’ Tenors Un Limited, a singing trio or ‘man band’ made up of Jem Sharples, Paul Martin and Scott Ciscon, with Graeme Taylor as the fabulous piano accompaniment, began performing together in 2022.
Their love of singing together has taken them all around the world with shows across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and regular tours throughout the UK and USA. Scott, Paul and Jem have performed alongside such notables as Sting on his world tour in London and in aid of UNICEF, Hayley Westenra, Lionel Ritchie, Simply Red, Daniel and Natasha Bedingfield, Beyonce, The Opera Babes and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, to name but a few! They’ve appeared in stadiums across the country including: Stamford Bridge, Elland Road, the AMEX, St James’ Park and the majestic Wembley Stadium where they sang ‘Abide With Me’ before the FA Cup Final. The guys also took part in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee tour and also had the honour of performing ‘Nessun Dorma’ at the memorial service for the football legend Sir Bobby Robson at Durham Cathedral. Tenors Un Limited have also appeared on BBC Radio 2’s ‘Friday Night is Music Night’, performed at the Royal Albert Hall and also enjoyed entertaining at Lord Richard Attenborough’s 80 birthday celebrations!
The talent that came to the Epsom Playhouse was incredible. Tenors Un Limited have enjoyed a fabulous career together and it was a privilege to hear them sing and hear the stories behind old masters as well as the inspiration for new unique creations.
I have to admit that prior to the performance I had been feeling a little daunted about what to expect as I’m not a musician, I’m not a member of a choir, to my mind I’m pretty much musically illiterate! Confessing this to Jem backstage, without hesitation he said ‘but you knew more than you thought’ and he was spot on! I was familiar with the classics, knew the more modern pop and could recognise and appreciate a whole host of other famous melodies, whilst also being transfixed and caught up in the moment when listening to their own new material.
Numbers included: ‘Love Changes Everything’, ‘Some Enchanted Evening’, Puccini’s spine tingling ‘Nessun Dorma’, Michael Buble’s ‘Everything’, ‘You Raise Me Up’, Frankie Valli’s ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’ to the Tensors Un Limited own beautiful compositions such as Viva La Vita and charity single ‘Carry You’ which went to no.4 in the Classical Download Chart.
The gents were joined on stage for a time by a 34 strong female choir (the Berrylands Belles) which bought a new element to the wonderful rollercoaster of a performance. From a fun sense of camaraderie whilst introducing the next song, to personal admissions and notable recollections of career highs, all before enthralling the audience with a thought-provoking harmony.
In their show entitled ‘That’s Amore’ which is currently touring the UK and USA, Tenors Un Limited have put together a collection of their favourite songs, including hits from the worlds of opera, musical-theatre and pop, as well as some original songs from their previous and upcoming albums. This is one of the most diverse and entertaining shows you’ll see within the genre – witty and irreverent one moment and heartfelt the next. The combination of powerful voices, rich harmonies, stories, anecdotes and beautiful love songs delivers an evening like no other.
Tenors Un Limited continue to tour nationwide with their standout show ‘That’s Amore’ I urge you to see it.
