IS A CLEAR OUT DUE?…

Due to current lockdown restrictions, we are all spending more time than usual in our homes and maybe this will continue once restrictions are lifted…who knows?!!!
But due to the fact of being IN all the time maybe while watching TV of an evening or whilst working from home, we notice how much clutter we accumulate and it slowly becomes more noticeable due to the increased amount of time we are spending at home. So never has there been a better time to have a clear out.
A couple of years ago we were all graced with the wonder that was the ‘Marie Kondo phenomenon’ it’s was all over Instagram, Facebook and in your Interior and Wellbeing magazines. Konmari was big news in 2019. However it does have a lingering relevance to how we live today during a pandemic, in which we are spending a majority of our time at home.
But what exactly is Konmari?
According to Marie Kondo it’s creator and author of the best seller: The Magic of Tidying Up, it is creating a happy lifestyle filled with objects which simply bring you joy.
If something no longer brings you joy you simply say goodbye to it.
To Have and to Hold: How To Achieve Kon Marie:
According to Marie Kondi, you should only keep items which truly bring you joy. When using the Kon Marie method tackle items rather than rooms, for example sort through clothing, books, toys, furniture etc.
Hold each item and ask yourself ‘Does it give me pleasure?’ If the answer is no then you need to let go of it, sounds a bit woo woo but the method works.
Where do I donate unwanted items?
Once you have cleared out your closets, wardrobes and emptied your bookcases and cupboards below is a guide to various charity shops/organisations that will collect your unwanted items including furniture once restrictions are lifted:

Children’s Toys, Clothing and Books

Epsom and St. Helier hospitals
Both hospitals often appeal to the community for good quality, unused toys and books for patients on their children’s wards. Donations are taken at:
Casey ward (Epsom)
Queen Marys Hospital for Children (St Helier)
All high street charity shops will take clothing and bric-a-brac in reasonable condition. There are plenty in and around Epsom and Ewell.
Also to consider:
Homeless Charities can be found on Facebook and Instagram or Women’s Refuges such as www.womensaid.org.uk.
Gifting quality items to friends or family is also an option or listing items on Facebook Market Place.
Life After Kon Marie:
A lot of families these days have issues with space.
After Christmas and Birthday’s there is an influx of toys and games for the children which need space, new garments of clothes need storing away and the endless supply of snacks are needing a home.
Maybe a space under the stairs can be made into a cupboard? Or a utility area could do with sprucing up with some shelving for laundry and homewares. The list is endless!
Once you have your Konmari attack and need a place to put all the piles of books you have accumulated (according to Marie Kondi you should only have 30 books in your home!) shelving will be your best option.
There maybe an alcove which you could use for shelving? Or perhaps create shelving towards the top of your walls?
1) Tidy up first before attempting Konmari.
2) Sort out by category not by room.
3) Hold each item and ask yourself “Does it bring joy? Do I love it?” If no then put to better use (see below).
4) Anything you don’t want always donate to charity or recycle.
5) Use storage jars for food items and boxes and crates for children’s toys.
6) Vacuum pack bags are great for clothes that you will wear during a different season.
7) Lastly fill your home with things you love.
