Fundraising for Dominic – help him climb mountains!

Local boy Dominic Dawson from Epsom is currently fundraising for a new wheelchair find out more about his story and how you could help him reach his goal…
Hey Dominic, can you tell us a bit about you?
I’m 15 years old and I have a disability called Spina Bifida means I was born with a gap in my spinal cord which affects nerve endings into my legs and feet. Both my feet are deformed and I have very little feeling from the knee down and none at all in my feet. As I’ve got older and heavier I’ve lost the ability to walk more than a few feet with crutches as it causes me too much pain so I’m pretty much in a wheelchair full time.
You are currently fundraising for a new wheelchair-can us tell me more about that?
I am a Air Scout in Epsom and recently I was selected as one of 10 Scouts to represent Surrey at the 2019 World Jamboree in America but for me to fully enjoy this experience I have realised I need a new wheelchair which is what I am fundraising for. The reason for needing a new wheelchair is that the campsite is of rugged terrain and takes around an hour to walk from one end to the other. My usual wheelchair will not allow me to get around without constant support, however the chair I’m am pictured in can climb mountains…literally.
How much do you need to fundraise for?
Altogether I need to raise around £5000 to purchase one of these chairs and any donations whether it’s £1 or £10 will make a huge difference to my current fund.
Will the new wheelchair make a difference to everyday life too?
Yes absolutely, having taken this chair out for a trial I have realised how much of a difference this will make to me in everyday life. I will be able to join activities and access places that I have previously missed out on. I can’t wait to reach my fundraising goal so I can start practising how to “drive” it to it’s full potential and start catching up on missed opportunities-this will make a massive difference to my everyday life and the activities I do. Even though the camp isn’t until 2019 I am fundraising now to allow time to build up the different muscles this chair will use.
For those that would like to donate to your cause Dom how can they do it?
Anyone that is so kind to want to donate can do so by visiting my go fund me page. Thank you so much to everyone that has already donated it really does mean a lot.
