FEMALE FOOTIE – EPSOM, EWELL AND SURROUNDS…

With the long over due prominence of professional women’s football being showcased on mainstream television and media channels over the past few years, there has been a subsequent increase in girls and women participating in football at grassroots level.
According to FIFA Since October 2021, there has been a 17% increase in female football players across all levels of the game.
On top of this there has been an impressive 30% increase in female registered community football teams and a 15% increase in female youth teams which is made up of girls aged between 5-18 years old.
The demand of female participation is demonstrated in our local area with many football teams changing the names of their teams to welcome a new generation of female players.
A welcome change in the right direction for everyone.
Below are some of the amazing local teams and clubs offering a space for budding female football players at various levels:
STONELEIGH ATHLETIC FC
Established in 1972, Stoneleigh Athletic FC was originally called Stoneleigh Boys however the team changed their name several years ago to attract female players.
The U7-U11 teams are mixed which encourages girls from a young age to participate in football at the same level as the boys.
The club is committed to encouraging more girls into the game by running girls training workshops during the holidays.
The club have U12-17 girls teams which form part of the Epsom and Ewell Youth League.
Currently they are looking for U10-U14 players (correct at time of publication)

Sutton United is a highly respected and successful football club which was founded in 1898.
They welcome girls to join from U10 to U16
Being trained and coached by UEFA coaches the girls team are encouraged to develop their skills offering a pathway potentially to join Sutton United Women’s team.
The Women’s team has furthered the careers of many female players with some
being selected for Brighton, Chelsea and Millwall.

EPSOM & EWELL COLTS
Epsom & Ewell Colts is a community led club with numerous amount of teams, this year they have launched a number of girls teams due to an increase in demand of female participation!
They need players for following teams: U6, U7, U8, U11, U13 and U14

Ashtead FC (boys and girls teams collectively) has been recently awarded by the FA as a Chartered Standard Community Club. This is the highest accolade for a grassroots club.
Founded in 1894, they welcome girls from reception age to join with a view for them to progress to the women’s team, Ashtead FC (Fillies)

Founded in 2000, Beecholme Belles objective is to give girls and women the opportunity to train and play football to the level that they wish.
Currently they have teams from U8-U18 plus a women’s team (16+)
Their ground is Beecholme Recreational Ground in Banstead.

Founded in 1938 WANDGAS is a FA community standard club welcoming girls and women of all ages.
Under 6s train every Saturday morning.

FIRST STEPS FOOTBALL
Held every Saturday from 10am-11.30 First Steps Football gives your 4-7 year old a great introduction into football.
Set up by Ex Wimbledon player, now teacher Gavin Bolger, First Steps is a pay as you go session which your child can attend as and when they want.
Spaces for boys and girls available.

DEVELOPMENT, TRAINING & COACHING:
Your child may want to simply develop or enhance their confidence on the pitch before joining a team.
The organisations below listed on the Epsom and Ewell Families Directory offer great training and coaching sessions throughout the season and beyond.
ROLL WITH IT: Coaching & Football
Established in 2021 and based in Ashtead, RWI focuses on both individual and small group sessions for both boys and girls of all ages.
They offer one on one coaching as well as weekly developmental sessions and holiday camps.

DC SPORTS SCHOOL
A sports school which helps develop players of all levels from established players wanting to develop their skillsets to first steps football sessions for younger or less confident players.
Weekly sessions are held at Blenheim School on Monday evenings between 5-6pm
Neat was founded in 2017 by two ex Chelsea football coaches, Ben and Grant.
Neat offer boys and girls both one to one development and small group sessions as well as offering holiday camps too.
As well as football they also offer a range of other sporting activities for your child.
