EPSOM DOWNS RACING – SEASON FINALE 2018
Posted by Anthony Besant on 02 Oct 2018
This past weekend was the season finale event of the year at Epsom Downs Racecourse – a family day for everyone to enjoy, the weather was bright albeit chilly but we went prepared with our two youngest children Bobby and Lilly. It was busy – but what’s great about this place is although there was a lot of people it never felt crowded. The course has been known to hold 130,000 people on Derby day before – now that is a lot of people!
For the children there was a Carousel and Boat swing – which was free of charge to use as often as they liked.
There was bubbles and lot’s of them.
Fish and Chips, Burgers, Sandwiches were all available in the main hall of the Duchess stand as well as plenty of places to sit and eat both inside and out. If you wanted a sit down meal there were Roast Dinner packages available. As well as food there are plenty of bars which were popular as they were also showing the Ryder Cup.
For those interested in the main point of the day – the horse racing, there were 6 races to watch and have a flutter on. The children were allowed to choose a horse for each race – I did talk them through how to read the previous form etc to help them come up with a more tactical selection other than just “I like that name” – I should have left them to it, it didn’t work 🙂 but it was fantastic seeing them both screaming and jumping up and down along with the crowds as the horses galloped up the final straight towards us – the best Bobby did was a 3rd place and he was still over the moon!!
After each race the winning horse is led off into the winning enclosure which is within arms length, it was very inclusive and we were able to see the horses from the parade ring. I find it fascinating to see who owns the horse (I’m just nosey) who is the trainer and the jockey, Bobby was very shocked at the size of the jockeys, he thought they looked cute!!! For anyone who is a keen follower Silvestre De Sousa (The Flat Jockeys Champion 2018) was on a winning streak, he has a 20% hit race at Epsom and was more than happy to sign peoples autographs requests – there was no red tape.
We all had a lovely day together, its so easy to forget about what we have on our very own doorstep and more importantly the children loved it! Bobby ended the day saying “it’s better than Chessington World of Adventures”.
We definitely recommend as a family day out. You can find out more information on upcoming events at the downs here with tickets for 2019 Derby Day now on sale.
