So let it be known – I’m not a HIIT workout girl and I’m not sure yet whether I’m a CrossFit girl.

BUT – I really loved trying out @ascensiontraining_epsom with Dee at their Open Day on Saturday. It was a day filled with taster sessions and a chance to chat with their coaches about fitness goals and to find out more about how the CrossFit sessions work.

We were taken through our Engine Club taster session with coaches Tom and John. A low-skill class, with no complex movements. Plenty of cardio, bodyweight movements & individual weights. No experience or induction is required for this class.

Starting with a warm-up and then into a full-on AMRAP (as many reps as possible) session in pairs – we set to push our fitness capabilities and were encouraged by the coaches along the way. After our 12-minute session on the SkiErg, jump box and squatting (and throwing) weighted wall balls; we were treated to a quick stretch.

Other options available at Ascension are:

CrossFit – A more complex class, focusing on learning new skills and strength development. A mixture of cardio, gymnastics and weightlifting. Open to all abilities, but does require an induction before joining.

Weightlifting – A class focusing on the Olympic Lifting movements of Snatch and Clean + Jerk, with lots of accessory work for skill and strength development. Open to all abilities, but an induction is required before joining.

They also offer personal training, nutrition support and Fit 4 Life classes – aimed at people with specific or long-term health conditions, or those over 60. It is a slower pace and offers more individualised training.

I’d heard a lot about CrossFit and I now understand why my friends love it. In a nutshell, Ascension Training is a welcoming community of coaches and gymgoers all wanting to support and cheer each other on.  They say:

“Through group classes and 1:1 personal training, we provide functional fitness training for everyone, with sessions available to kids and teens, all the way up to our over 60s group and everyone in between. We also offer sessions for those just entering fitness for the first time and those in high-risk groups with long-term or complex health conditions.”
