Hey Jason (Yo Sarnie), tell us a bit about you?

I wanted to start Yo Sarnie because I felt there was no where consistently exceptional to get a good sandwich.  I started the Deli in Epsom because that is where I’m based with my young family and I wanted to have a local business.  The aim has been to give the ultimate sandwich experience by producing a menu that is different from the norm.

Congratulations on your Epsom and Ewell Business Award for Best Customer Service. Your doors have been open for just over a year now, what else has been a highlight for you in your first year?

Just to be here a year on is really big for us, connecting with the community and seeing customers coming back and seeing new faces and people recommending us.  All of this has really made us feel like we are building a community business organically, and this is what we set out to achieve from the get go.

You specialise in sandwiches with a difference, what’s your best seller and what is the strangest request you’ve ever had?

Best sellers is our Uncle’s Jerk Chicken Sandwich which is a sourdough bread sandwich filled with Caribbean spiced chicken thighs with pepper mayo and lettuce, the chicken is seasoned with a special family recipe.

For our strangest request it was quite clear this person LOVED onions, the order came via uberorder and was for a steak sizzler sandwich this is standard sandwich on the menu that comes with fried onions but this customer wanted fried onions, raw onion, spring onion and onion chutney.  Crazy Combo right? if you are this person we would love to hear from you.

Who is Yo Sarnie for? What’s your typical customer?

Yo Sarnie is for everyone particularly for those that buy lunch every day, naturally we appeal to those that work in the town.  However we also have people in for business meetings, mums with babies and toddlers, families that come in for lunch and also those that are going to the cinema come in either before a film or after.

As a business what have you learned in the last year and what piece of advice would you give to a new start up?

Networking is key and we’ve taken time to build relationships with other local businesses.  I also believe that being consistent with our offering and staying true to what we set out to do – sandwiches is what we do best.  We’ve also learnt to take the rough with the smooth…learnt to manage our expectations in terms of growth.

Our advice to any new start ups is always look for reasons to do something rather than not to.

You recently hosted a vegan event with Ripe and Nine, what else have you got planned event wise for this year?

We will be hosting different themed supper clubs through out the year and we’re really excited about that.  We’re also collaborating with other local businesses including bakers, the butcher and chefs.

Lastly for those that have been into the deli yet, why should they visit you? where can they find you?

In all honestly a year on I think we can say we make the BEST sandwiches in Epsom.  So if you are looking for something exceptional by the way of brunch or lunch, whether that’s a sandwich or a salad come visit us we are definitely worth a try.
