Hey Peter, tell us a bit about you?

I have been a foodie since a young age and actually wanted to follow a career in the hospitality sector since the age of 7! I worked in high end restaurants as a chef for 10 years, in Dublin, France, Australia and finally in London, with stints in The Fat Duck with Heston Blumenthal, and Wild Honey with Anthony Demetre. I then switched to front of house and worked my way up to senior management with Sir Terence Conran’s restaurant group before my entrepreneurial journey started with a street food venture in 2017. Since then, I have launched (and closed!) my own restaurant just off Carnaby Street, launched Food Motion consultancy to support early stage hospitality operators to develop, launch and scale concepts, and launched Epsom Social in 2022.

What is the back story, how did the Epsom Social idea come about?

At the back end of Covid, one of my Food Motion clients introduced me to the landlord of Epsom Square and we pitched the idea of a collaboration to launch a food hall in Epsom Square. We understood the London food hall model very well so we essentially adapted this concept to a neighbourhood setting and created a community-focused venue incorporating a blend of food, drink, entertainment and events.

Epsom Social has recently celebrated it’s first birthday, what has been the highlights in your first year of opening?

We were nervous that there would not be enough people in the area to give us sufficient trade to sustain the business, so it was amazing to see a lot of people come in when we opened, and we have had so many great days and nights when there is a real buzz of lots of people enjoying themselves in the venue.

As a new business in Epsom what have you learned in the last year and what piece of advice would you give to a new start up in the area?

We have learned so so much! It was part of our approach from the start anyway, but as a neighbourhood town, really integrating and supporting the community in every way possible is extremely important! In tough times, it is also very important to provide value to people, but whenever we put on a cool event, we generally see very decent turnouts, so people still want to get out of the house and have fun!

Lastly, for those that have not been to the Epsom Social yet, why should they visit?

At Epsom Social, you can experience the best food, drink and events from local independent vendors and performers. The venue seems to attract people for different purposes throughout the day and week, whether for a coffee and chat in the morning, lunch break, family day, or entertainment in the evening.

Also we have just launched our new pizza concept NAPO. NAPO uses high quality Italian ingredients and offers a range of classic pizzas alongside some innovative toppings (try the Smoked Epsom!) and the indulgent (and delicious!) Angioletti alla Nutella – deep fried pizza dough drizzled with Nutella!!

Thanks Peter!
