Hi Vinesh, can you tell us a bit about the Quadrant Dental Practice?

Quadrant Dental Practice is an exceptional place to work, having been in existence for over 50 years it has built up an ever growing loyal patient base. The practice prides itself on being a family orientated practice, with a personal approach for every patient rather than seeing the patient as a number through the door. Having an owner like Judith, who sees that the practice is delivering a high standard of ethical dentistry, is inspiring and refreshing. Importantly to me Judith ensures there is a happy working environment that means you want to come in to work everyday!

Tell us more about you?

I want people to know that I am a dentist who is here to make a difference on society’s views on dentists in general. I want people to know that I have their best interests at heart to ensure they can make well informed decisions on their oral health choices. Having an interest in the patient as a whole and not just their teeth I want to show people that dentists are health care professionals that can positively impact their health and wellbeing not just treat pain and disease.

As my friends will say, my calm, relaxed and approachable manor translates into my approach to dentistry. I enjoy finding out about my patients and their interests, building rapports and striking up conversations and engaging with them on a personal level.

What do you say to someone who wants to improve their smile?

Beauty, as corny and cliched as it sounds, really is in the eye of the beholder and comes from within. However if that voice within is saying your current smile is holding you back for whatever reason, then cosmetic dentistry can provide safe and predictable solutions. The common misconception is that perfecting your teeth is very expensive and damaging but it doesn’t have to be.

Subtle composite bonding, which is like adding shellac to the nails, is minimal and is only added to the edges of the teeth and not the whole tooth surface making is less invasive and doesn’t involve cutting down of teeth. Additionally, if you change your mind in the future it can be easily removed.

Another option is non-prep veneers, which is similar to adding a contact lens on the whole surface.

The least invasive and affordable option is to simply whiten the colour of your teeth, and without touching the tooth surface can improve one’s appearance dramatically.

Some people are absolutely terrified of going to see the dentist, what do you do make these patients feel at ease?

I want to try and break the stigma of dentists being that scary person behind the mask and instead show that I can empathise and understand their fears and together try and remove them and make their dental experience a calm, manageable journey.  One thing I’ve learnt from having worked in the London hospitals, award winning private practices to NHS practices, is that communication is paramount. Understanding the patient and their fears and tailoring my approach to provide a bespoke service for the specific individual, ensuring they are in complete control, even to the choice of radio station they wish to listen to! and of course having gentle hands helps!!

Just for fun, what do you enjoy most about your job?

My passion lies within cosmetic dentistry and that is why I am studying for an MsC in Aesthetic dentistry at Kings College London. I think giving someone the ability to smile is one of the most fulfilling parts of dentistry. I do believe there is an element of artistry involved. I love the way dentistry is constantly evolving and thinking about the next challenge and how to improve my evidence based dentistry further is what drives me.

The title of this interview is “all I want for Christmas is perfect teeth” is there something you offer that would make a great Christmas present?

Dental whitening is an amazing gift for anyone considering improving their smile. Whitening your teeth can only be done safely at the dentist. For example, some whitening toothpastes contain abrasive particles which can damage the teeth. The advantage of the dentist is that the teeth and gums can be assessed before any whitening can be performed to ascertain the underlying cause of the discolouration first. As tempting as low prices online may sound you cannot guarantee what is in the unregulated products.

Whitening involves taking moulds of the teeth and having bespoke trays made. I prefer White Dental Beauty, where little droplets of gel are placed in the trays and worn either in the day or overnight, for a period of 2-3 weeks, until you are happy with the colour. Go on, try it, you will be impressed!!

Thank you Vinesh 🙂
