I recently had the absolute pleasure of visiting fully qualified Reflexologist Helen Weston from Balance and Wellness Reflexology in her beautiful treatment room within her lovely home in Ewell Village.

What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a safe complementary therapy that can be performed to promote relaxation.  It is also a therapy that is proven to encourage physiological healing and improve the functioning of the body more efficiently.

Reflexology involves the technique of the therapist applying gentle pressure to a number of reflex points on the feet which correspond to various areas of the body.

Cumulatively reflexology has a number of benefits which are prominent with regular and consistent treatments, those include;

Reducing the effects of stress
Improvement of the immune system
Improvement of the circulatory system
Elimination of toxins
Promoting relaxation and wellbeing
Regulating the nervous system
Helping to balance and regulate hormones during pregnancy and menopause

Helens Story:
Helen’s background was as a qualified nursery nurse and later working alongside families as a family support worker throughout Surrey.  Her career came to a halt after becoming a mother to her two children who both suffered from a chronic medical condition therefore needing Helen’s full-time care.

Navigating their unpredictable health, Helen was always looking for ways to reduce their pain whilst improving their well-being alongside their outstanding medical care that they were receiving.

Helen then contacted a reflexologist who came regularly to give very gentle treatments which would actively reduce the pain her son was experiencing through his condition and as a result her son would feel in a great state of wellbeing and relaxation.
Helen observed how effective reflexology was for her son, inspiring her to later train as a reflexologist!

Eventually as Helen’s children got older her responsibilities as a full time carer started to ease.  Helen felt this would naturally be the right time to start her journey as a reflexologist and attended The London School of Reflexology in Regents Park where she studied to gain her ITEC level 3 in Reflexology.  Helen also took further reflexology training in pre-conceptual care, Pregnancy and Post Natal care.

Helen’s ethos in regards to her practice is:
‘My intention as a reflexologist is to offer deep relaxation within a compassionate and non-judgmental environment.’

My Treatment:
My background as a beauty and massage therapist meant I had a vague understanding of the concept behind reflexology, however I was excited to learn more and experience first hand a reflexology treatment from Helen.

I walked over to her beautiful home in the heart of Ewell Village to be welcomed by Helen, who instantly made me feel at ease and took me into her relaxing treatment room, which smelt of relaxing essential oils.

There is a sense of calm as soon as you’re sat in the treatment couch where you are surrounded by a warm, snuggly heated blanket.  I was already relaxed before the treatment had started!

Due to the holistic nature of the treatment, Helen carried out a detailed consultation. We discussed lifestyle and any health concerns that might have an impact on my daily wellbeing and wellness.  This is a crucial part of the treatment as it gives Helen a background into how her treatment can help the client, also if there are any issues such as diabetes or pregnancy that can alter the treatment.

Helen then explains what the treatment will involve and checks if I have any questions before reclining the treatment chair.
Helen preps the feet and applied an essential oil based massage balm from Ireland to help energise (my feet have poor circulation which we discussed in the consultation). I’m already in a deep state of relaxation!

Each foot is treated separately, Helen carried out a series of pressure point movements which reflected areas of the body that may have issues or sensitivity.  Helen explained that the foot is divided into zones that correspond to different areas of the body.

The spine and the occipital (base of skull) subsequently were areas flagged up throughout my treatment which made complete sense as I had suffered a mild fitness related back injury during Christmas in my lumber spine area, and my occipital had been affected by eczema recently.  I was amazed!

I really didn’t want the treatment to end and instantly felt lighter after it had finished.  My feet felt like I was walking on a velvet cushion for the rest of the day, as well as feeling a great sense of wellbeing.

Helen discussed the areas that came up during the treatment and gave home care/post treatment advice such as drinking water throughout the day to flush away any toxins released from the treatment.  I will definitely be returning!
