A professional theatre performance, in the sunshine, surrounded by the sweet smell of lavender. What’s not to love?

I remember when I first heard that Mayfield Lavender, one of my favourite local places to visit, was renovating their Reigate Road farm shop and adding a cafe and theatre. Words could not explain my excitement.

After a decade of visiting the lavender fields in Banstead, I couldn’t wait to have a venue in Epsom and Ewell. Coupled with the fact that I LOVE open-air theatre, it was a recipe for success, in my opinion.

While visiting the new cafe and shop, over the winter, we heard about the inaugural season at the Lavender Theatre. An all-singing, all-dancing, gun-toting glory! Irving Berlin’s classic musical ‘Annie Get Your Gun’.

Having grown up singing show songs at school, I was thrilled to be invited to watch the professionals belt out classics including, “Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better)”, “You Can’t Get a Man with a Gun,” and “There’s No Business Like Show Business!” at their matinée performance.

Upon arrival, we were guided to our parking – surrounded by lavender, with bees buzzing and butterflies flying, before making our way over to the impressive new Lavender Theatre event space, where there is a BBQ and bar available for a pre-show lunch or drink.

The auditorium, surrounded by more lavender, has tiered undercover seating (great for sunny or rainy weather) facing the stripped-back but brilliantly conceptualised stage. Plus there is a live band, which definitely adds to the ambience of the show.

From the moment the show started until the minute it ended, I am convinced that I was smiling. The energetic and incredibly talented cast of professional actors sang and danced their hearts out under the baking sunshine and in the wind. I was taken on an emotional rollercoaster and was in awe of the ingenious staging and props, and spectacular choreography.

Not sure what it’s about? The show follows the life and times of legendary sharpshooter Annie Oakley and her rise to fame at the end of the 19th Century. A trip to the Wild West.

‘Annie Get Your Gun’ is playing at the Lavender Theatre, 139 Reigate Road, Epsom KT17 3DW from the 17th of July to the 5th of August and you can book your tickets at

Ticket prices start at £35 with concessions available.

There really is no business, like show business. Enjoy!
