A TASTE OF SRI LANKA IN WORCESTER PARK
Posted by Juliet Wheater on 18 Feb 2020
For an island in the Indian Ocean, roughly the size as Ireland, Sri Lanka boasts diversity, luxury and natural beauty. I was lucky enough to have visited Sri Lanka and its bustling capital for which this restaurant is named after, 10 years ago and I enjoyed a variety of activities such as a safari, tea plantation tours and beach days but what I didn’t expect was the absolutely exquisite cuisine! Therefore, I had high expectations for Colombo Kitchen, a stylish restaurant located on Central Road in Worcester Park and it didn’t disappoint.
My dining partners and I enjoyed the intricate flavours of traditional cuisine by Chef Sylvia Perera, many menu recipes of which, have been passed down the generations of her family. On advice, we opted to try sharing platters designed for two. We tucked into beautifully battered bites, my favourite of which was a samosa combined with a sauce with real kick.
We were intrigued by the Hoppers. Made in full view of the restaurant diners, this Sri Lankan street food is a bowl shaped white pancake. Ours were soft and spongy in the middle with a crisp, delicate trim at the top. We added spicy sambal flavours, each presented within pretty little painted dishes and the combination of chilli, pepper, garlic and ginger sauces, combined with the refreshing coconut Hopper was a joy.
For our main meals, we opted to share again. We selected a tender mutton curry and named after a location in Sri Lanka, the Negombo king prawn curry and lentil coconut curry as well as steamed basmati and golden saffron rice dishes. The sophistication of each dish was delicious, the flavours were aromatic, complex and complementary.
Take a journey through Sri Lanka, with Colombo Kitchen a unique and very welcome addition to Worcester Park high street.
