I think I am the heaviest that I have ever been. Okay, maybe not 9 months pregnant heavy, but pretty close. I remember being in secondary school and being desperate to weigh 58 kg’s – the same weight as some of the other girls in my year. It was completely unrealistic for me then, but I remember how hard I tried to lose that weight. And how disappointed I was with myself for not being as slim as them.

I had a very unhealthy relationship with food and exercise as a teenage girl. I would either eat like a bird, or binge eat and exercise like a demon. There was no in between. This unhealthy relationship continued through university, and it was only when I fell pregnant with my first child that I started eating healthier. Swapping ‘bad’ carbs for healthier ones, upping my greens and protein, and doing regular yoga.

I gained a very healthy weight in my first pregnancy, which was easy to lose; but then put it all back on again when I stopped breast-feeding. Since having children, and although I am always dashing about, I have really battled to lose weight. I eat badly, enjoy the odd glass of wine or two and work, for the most part, at a desk. Couple that with a bad sleeping routine, and stress and anxiety, and you have a recipe for disaster (or the average mummy’s ‘normal’).

2019 was going to be my year to make healthy changes and it was going really well until the Summer. After which, I lacked the energy and motivation to keep up with my pre-Summer holiday training and exercise.

When I first met the lovely Minal, one of the owners at Fitness Space, I was at my lowest. Battling with lack of body confidence and health concerns – including being overweight, terrible anxiety, having low energy, and having regular migraines. I felt pretty down, and not very inspired.

Min asked me why I wanted to join the gym and the only thing that I kept thinking was that I wanted to get healthier, and happier – exercise really has that affect on me.

Since joining Fitness Space, and being mortified by how much I weigh and how unhealthy my body is, I have started making the changes to become a healthier me. My coach, David, is fantastic and is a great motivator – he also tells brilliant stories and makes me laugh a lot; which helps to make the workout enjoyable. In fact, everyone at FS Epsom are brilliant – friendly, welcoming and ready to help.

I have tried, and loved, the Hot Yoga class – I had always wanted to try this. I’ve also done Pilates and Yoga classes – Nina’s class is my favourite yoga class that I have EVER done; and there are many other classes that I cannot wait to try. The great thing about FS is that you don’t need to book classes a week before, like other gyms, and they aren’t oversubscribed.

Another one of my favourite things at FS is the technology. The app is super handy – to talk to your coach, track your training and book classes; the Technogym machines have QR codes to scan and track workouts -they even tell you when to rest, track how heavy your weights are, and they measure your RPM. You also get this handy little tracker, to use instead of your phone on the equipment. And although the thought of training by myself gave me a bit of anxiety, and almost put me off going, the machines also have videos to explain how to use them correctly (or you could ask one of the helpful team members for help).

The changing rooms are LUSH; and have Cowshed products, GHD hair-dryers and straighteners. What a treat!

Fitness Space is a fantastic new addition to Epsom, and I cannot wait to keep you up-to-date on my progress to a healthier me.
